Tjuma Pulka – 96.3FM began broadcasting in October 2005. The Indigenous owned and controlled Community Radio Station was established by Karlkurla Language and Culture Aboriginal Corporation. 96.3FM now operates independently from the Language and Culture Centre. Tjuma Pulka Media Aboriginal Corporation is situated in Kalgoorlie-Boulder, which is 600 kilometres east of Perth. Apart from gold and nickel mining, the region has a significant grazing industry and growing tourism market. Kalgoorlie-Boulder has a population of approximately 32,000 people. But the town also has a rich Indigenous Cultural heritage made up of different groups of Indigenous people from the surrounding area. Such as the Ngaanyatjarra people whose homelands lay in the Gibson Desert which is north east of Kalgoorlie-Boulder, and the Pitjantjarra/Pila (Spinifex) People from the Great Victorian Desert which is east of Kalgoorlie-Boulder. The Indigenous owned and controlled Community Radio Station is defined by its ownership and programming and the community it is authorised to serve, and its structure is based on community access and reflects the special interests and needs of the audience it is licensed to serve. 96.3FM is an Indigenous Community Radio Station that is in development and aims to give Indigenous people a strong voice that is community based, relaxed and makes you feel good. |
